Volume 6, Issue 2: March 2026

As Moraine Valley nears the end of another semester, many students are planning for the fall. For some, the thought of a new semester brings stress over affording tuition or making sure financial aid will cover all of their classes.

At Moraine Valley, all students are eligible to apply for scholarship funds that don’t need to be repaid. One source of funding for these scholarships is donations from local clubs and organizations.

The Last Mile scholarship is funded by the Palos Park Woman’s Club with earnings from its annual Mother’s Day Walk. Through Moraine, the Last Mile scholarship provides financial assistance to students who are close to graduation.

Founded in 1902, the Palos Park Woman’s Club is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with more than 130 members. They work in the local community providing cultural, educational, wellness and civic interests.

The club celebrates Mother’s Day weekend with a walk, roll or stroll at Lake Katherine to support local programs in the Palos community. The fourth annual Mother’s Day Walk will be held on May 9 from 8-11 a.m., rain or shine. The event includes a variety of route options to choose from, with all routes including water stops:

  • a one-mile wood-chip path around Lake Katherine
  • a two-mile paved path along the Cal-Sag Trail
  • a three-mile route combining both paths

The registration fee is $30 for adults and $20 for children ages 3-18. Children 2 and under can attend the walk for free.  All paid participants also receive an event T-shirt.

Whether they’re honoring a mother, remembering a loved one, or simply enjoying time together outdoors, people of all ages and abilities can participate. The club encourages people to come support students’ futures.
