Challenging combat, beautiful environments, and just absolutely awesome designs for the monsters. Capcom took me on a wonderful journey, really outdoing themselves with the newest installment to the Monster Hunter series: Monster Hunter Wilds. This game made me want to continue playing and see what more it had to offer.

I’ve been having an absolute blast playing Wilds, easily sinking 90 hours into this game and not regretting a second of it. This game is fun and beautiful and provides endless hours of enjoyment, especially if you have a friend to play it with.

Monster Hunter Wilds is an open-world RPG where you play as, you guessed it, a monster hunter. Your main job is to fight creatures that might be a danger or threat to the natural ecosystem in the game.

The story itself is pretty simple. A boy is found in a desert which is part of the Forbidden Lands, once thought uninhabited. Your job is to explore these lands, discover their unique ecosystem and try to bring this boy back to his village while defeating any monster that might stand in your way.

The campaign is pretty short and could easily be knocked out in about 15 hours, maybe a little bit longer if you’re new to the series. However, don’t let that dissuade you. Even though it’s a short campaign, that doesn’t mean it’s lacking content. I spent a lot of my time doing side quests and hunting monsters I thought looked cool to attain some sick outfits.

Getting sidetracked by the 30 different titans featured in this game is bound to happen, especially because of the rewards and materials offered to you via these encounters. A couple of smaller monsters are included that can sometimes hold their own sets of armor alongside other materials used for secret armors that you get from trading with NPCs.

There are 14 weapons to choose from, each providing its own unique play style. Are you a fan of swinging around something heavy that does a lot of damage? Then use a hammer, great sword or charge blade. Maybe you like taking your enemies out from a distance. If so, use a bow, heavy blow gun or light blow gun.

When I played, I used the hammer and the dual blades, both simple weapons. The dual blades do less damage than most weapons, but they make up for it with how fast they are, while the hammer does greater damage but is slow. It’s the easiest large weapon to handle. Each weapon has many versions that provide their own status effect such as fire, blast, paralysis, poison and others.

Monster Hunter Wilds is one of the best games I’ve played in the last couple of years.

After spending 90 hours just grinding this game out, I have to say Monster Hunter Wilds is one of the best games I’ve played in the last couple of years. If you enjoy a game that keeps you excited, I highly recommend this installment. The crafting and the gear progression is easy to understand, so if you’re a newcomer to the series, this would be a great game to start with.

Capcom plans to keep updating the game, so players won’t get bored. There’s still plenty of content to come to Wilds, and I’m very excited to see what this game has in store for the future.
