After “A Woman is Not a Potted Plant” by Alice Walker : Poetry > A Woman is the Wilderness

A Woman is the Wilderness

Her roots started at her base

But have spread for miles across the forest floor

Uninhibited

Uncut.

A Woman is the Wilderness

Her leaves stretching high above the canopy

Unashamed to grasp the sun.

A Woman is the Wilderness

Life flourishes in her care

Her Leaves provide shade

But she knows better than to ensnare.

About the author

Joelle Foote

I am a freshman at Moraine Valley Community College. Of the classes I have taken so far, my favorites are my poetry class, my Drawing 101 class and my 2D design class. I’ve learned so much in these classes from both my teachers and my peers, and I am excited to keep doing so. As my favorite classes hint to, I am a very creative person and love to draw, sing, read and write. In the future I plan to become an author and illustrator.
